Chalk Tunnels

In Polish Chełmskie Podziemia Kredowe. Open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. These are the city’s main attraction and are about 12 meters underground.

Started in the Medieval period, the chalk extracted was sent all over the country until it was discontinued in the 19th century.

For hundreds of years, under Chełm’s old city buildings pits were dug by the residents in their cellars. The chalk was extracted by the inhabitants of Chełm, who sold it on to others.

After some time the corridors were linked up creating an underground system of corridors and large chambers, known as ‘halls’, connecting the many pits which existed on several levels.

Visits are by guided tours, in Polish only and take about an hour.

The temperature in the tunnels is a constance 9 degrees all year round so you should wear appropriate clothing. There are some 15km (9 miles) of tunnels on a number of levels.

During World War II, Jews were sheltered in the shafts until later found by the Germans.

After selected sections of the corridors were adapted for tourism in the 1970s, the tunnels were opened to visitors. The present-day tourist route was given its final route in 1985. It runs through three underground complexes of corridors, the Church of Holy Apostles, the Messengers and under the Old City’s Market Square.
