Geography of Świnoujście

Świnoujście or in German: Swinemünde, both names meaning Świna or mouth, is a city and seaport on the Baltic Sea and Szczecin Lagoon, located in the north-west of Poland next to the German border. Świnoujście is situated mainly on the islands of Usedom and Wolin, but also occupies smaller islands, of which the largest is Karsibór island, once part of Usedom, now separated by the Piast Canal formerly the Kaiserfahrt which was dug in the late 19th century between 1874 and 1880 to facilitate ship access to Szczecin (Stettin).

Karsibór Island

Having an area of 14 km² Karsibór Island is the smallest inhabited of Świnoujście and part of the 44 islands making up this area. Access is via a new bridge for both vehicles and pedestrians. The island is a great place for nature lovers such as bird watchers, anglers, canoeists and the boating fraternity or just to relax and unwind. The highest point of the Island is a hill known as Piekarzyna which was created to protect the residents in times of flooding.

History of Świnoujście

Karsibór Island was where Gustavus Adophus, King of Sweden during the invasion of the region of West Pomerania in 1630, stopped to relax for a few days at the rectory near to the church.

The British Royal Air Force has a memorial here commemorating the last wartime loss from 617 Squadron which took place on 16 April 1945, when 18 Lancaster aircraft set off to attack the German cruiser Lutzow laying in the Kiel Canal. This being the third mission against the ship as the previous two, in the preceding days had been unsuccessful, due to the poor weather conditions. Most of the Lancasters attacked the ship and successfully bombed their target on this attempt, but due to heavy German flak near the target, Lancaster NG228 was hit, and crashed in Karsibór woods near Świnoujście killing all the crew.
